The designation of being Gold Medal is only given out sparingly as it represents the highest quality of aquatic habitat in Colorado. Special regulations are required to maintain Gold Medal quality. There are over 80,000 miles of trout rivers in the state of Colorado, but only 162 miles are currently designated as Gold Medal. Two rivers in the Roaring Fork Valley designated as Gold Medal are the famous Frying Pan River and the Roaring Fork River. We are also blessed to have the Colorado River and the Crystal River which provides excellent trout fishing as well. We must not forget the smaller streams, creeks and ponds located in this area that feed these mighty rivers.
